SKYLAND WORKFORCE CENTER is a project of Building Bridges Across the River, a ward 8 nonprofit.
We are a collaborative designed to engage individuals, business, government, and community-based organizations to serve as a hub for a range of services and opportunities for people working toward self-sufficiency through employment.
OUR IMPACT
Every person who walks through our doors is facing a myriad of challenges in addition to unemployment. It is not uncommon for people to lack stable housing, adequate medical care, or valid identification. We offer individuals support like case management to help address people’s basic needs. Our partner’s programs provide a structured space for people who want to improve employment-related skills and obtain industry-recognized certifications.
There are other people whose immediate need for income outweighs their desire or ability to commit time and effort to completing a program. Instead, they come to us because they want someone to review their resume before they attend a job fair, or they are uncertain about how to answer behavioral interview questions on an online job application. In 2019, we expanded our services to include weekly resume development and job search assistance. Each Tuesday and Thursday, our volunteers and staff assist people in the computer lab to create or update their resume and apply for jobs online. Providing this supportive service has made it possible for us to offer immediate and flexible employment assistance to our community. To date, over 5,000 people have received services and participated in our programs, and we have helped over 600 residents find jobs. |
